6/7/2023 0 Comments Juniper wilesShe has long since retired and lives off royalties from the show, with no desire to revisit it or attend the lucrative conventions that her agent still contacts her about. The title character of Juniper Wiles starred in a television series about the detective Nora Constantine several years before the novel begins. According to de Lint, Juniper Wiles is a story in which he approaches the latter version of urban fantasy. One is the mythic tales told by de Lint or in the Borderlands series, the other has a tendency to focus on vampires, werewolves, and other fantastic beasts moving through an urban environment. I've long felt that “urban fantasy" referred to two distinct sub-genres. In his introduction, de Lint notes that he is often tagged as a writer of urban fantasy, however the term as it frequently is applied doesn't really fit the stories he tells about Newford. De Lint has returned to Newford with his new novella, Juniper Wiles, which is quite different than the stories he has previously set there. JUNIPER WILES By Charles de Lint Triskell Press 978-1-98 249pp/$16.99/April 2021Īlthough Charles de Lint has written novels set in a wide range of places, from the Cornwall of The Little Country to the American Southwest of The Wind in His Heart, the setting that is most widely associated with him is the city of Newford, with a vigorous art scene overlaying a world where magic and fairy is just beneath the surface.

In Nevil Shute’s literary tour-de-force, A Town Like Alice, he weaves the story of a set of characters who chose to rise above their abhorrent experiences during the height of the Second World War. Like phoenixes rising from the ashes after 500-years, their are those amongst us who roar back at life, never shackled by the pains of the past. Rising above the din are stories of survival, of hope, of courage and of rising above the circumstances. But war stories are not always about violence and bloodshed. It is from these printed works that we learn and understand the way in which wars have shaped our modern landscape. In countless a literary work, the horrors of war have been immortalized. 6/6/2023 0 Comments The bully by sophie larkThey were easy to root for and I would love to see more Dean and Cat. Cat gained self-confidence that allowed her to really blossom, while Dean just completely evolved from a ball of rage with a hair trigger temper to a reasonable man who could laugh at himself. I loved the characters and how they changed for the better based on their relationship. It’s like a Hogwarts for Bratva and I wasn’t enthralled at first but the dynamic between Dean and Cat really pulled me in. These are the children of mobsters and they’re training for their future roles in their respective organizations at this specialized school. I wasn’t completely into this story in the early pages since Dean wasn’t that likable and I had no context for what was happening at the school. He was awful to Cat initially but had his reasons. Their story has a strange beginning but once you get to know them, it’s quite fitting. Based on how much I loved these characters and their story, I’m sure I’d enjoy the prior books but I definitely don’t regret starting here because Cat and Dean were awesome. It probably would have been a little easier to grasp in the early pages if I had read the previous books, but this read just fine as a standalone. This is the third book in the series but I somehow missed that and had no idea until I was at least halfway through the story, duh. Society can improve virtue in regard to chastity by looking at it from a different view point. Promoting chastity and adopting it as a way of life does not gel with people’s values systems now, who think of it as quite a traditional way of life and consequently few people follow such advice. In the sexualized society of today, people perceive the promotion of chastity as old fashioned and a formal kind of impractical practice. Society today does not attach much value to chastity as a virtue in the present times since it has now become difficult to associate chastity with the current practices of mankind except that it may sometimes relate to certain relationships with religious beliefs. 6/5/2023 0 Comments Horrible bear bookA bear accompanies the girl back to her home, so she can bury her father’s bones next to her mother’s, and helps her through the winter. Soon, the girl is officially alone, and it’s then, with no other ties to humanity left, that she moves still closer to nature and to joy. That belief is what gets him killed when he reaches into a darkened crevice looking for salvage and receives a nasty animal bite. He also sees value in the things left behind in the sunken place where the “others” once lived, which he and his daughter pass by on their journey to the sea for salt, convinced that they might be able to turn glass into arrowheads or find some amusement looking into a mirror. He carries on that legacy by reading books by Virgil, Homer, Hilda Doolittle, and Wendell Berry. The father once had his own parents who were still searching for “others,” and the hope of humanity’s continuance is alive in him. If only it wasnt repetitive and disingenuous, making her a bit of a poseur as well as a poser. As Dederer entered the precinct of motherhood, she took up yoga, the inspiration for this cleverly yogacentric memoir. As she looks back to her ambiguous family situationher mother fell in love with a hippie but stayed married to, though separated from, her remarkably tolerant husbandDederer contrasts womens flight from the soul-shriveling domesticity of that era with the rise of the super-stressed-out supermom, as women feel compelled to do everything perfectly in every sphere. A book reviewer and social critic with bylines in the New York Times, Slate, and Vogue, Dederer acidly deconstructs hip, politically correct Seattle, a very different place than the city she grew up in during the 1970s. Dederers humor is tangy and precision-aimed her targets are the sine qua non of memoirs: mothers and marriage. This book is perfect for beginners who want to learn how to buy and hold real estate.
